Walk in the Ghost Watershed (Alberta)

June 2 @ 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Rescheduled from May 25 to June 2.

Join the Ghost Watershed Alliance Society for a walking tour of the restoration sites in the Waiparous Creek sub-basin. Several restoration projects have been undertaken in the area by Trout Unlimited Canada, Cows and Fish and GWAS with the goal to improve watershed health and fish habitat. We will be looking at riparian restoration using native plants, beaver dam analogues and open bottom culverts reconnecting fish habitat.

Please note that this walk will take place on ungroomed, backcountry trails. You need to be reasonably fit and sure-footed to take part in the walk. Participation in this event is at your own risk.

When: 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Sunday, June 2, 2024
Where: Meeting location will be near Benchlands off Hwy 40, app. 25 minutes driving time from Cochrane.
The exact meeting location will be sent to everyone registered for the hike a day before the event.
About the walk: The walk will lead us along wetlands, through open meadows and forests. This will be an easier hike with a total distance of app. 5 km, but with a couple of steeper sections climbing and descending hills. Please note that we will be walking cross county, not on groomed trails. Good hiking boots or trail runners are required, you need to be able to walk up and down short sections of steep hills. We will be stopping frequently along the way looking at restoration sites.

This walk will be lead by the GWAS Executive Director, Marina Krainer. Marina has been engaged in bio-engineering workshops since 2013 and learned many of the techniques and principles from bio-engineering specialist Dave Polster.
