Canada’s 1929 killer tsunami: 93 years ago today in Newfoundland

On this date, Nov. 18, in history in 1929, an earthquake in Cape Breton sent a 15-metre tidal wave onto Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. The tsunami of water killed at least 27 people and did $2 million in damage. Giant waves hit the coast at a speed of 40 km/hr and entire houses were washed out to sea. Hundreds lost their homes.
