There is a direct link between the water that we use, the water that goes down the drain and the water that flows down the North Saskatchewan River. The City of Edmonton does its part by treating and recycling wastewater, mandating low flow fixtures and keeping natural waters safe. Water services for Edmonton are provided by EPCOR. Water travels along the river to EPCOR’s E.L. Smith and Rossdale Water Treatment Plants. Water is brought into the treatment plant by pipes located deep in the river that are specially designed to protect fish. The water enters the treatment process where it is clarified, filtered and disinfected, making it safe to use. Throughout this process, EPCOR employees test the water quality. In fact, Water Quality Specialists conduct over 100,000 tests a year.
